Katie Couric Can't Save CBS' Evening News

MEDIA / KATIE COURIC CAN'T SAVE CBS' EVENING NEWS

Donklephant

The CU Smiley Guy .. Sorry folks, I just REALLY thought this smiley was cool and had to share it. CU ADMINThe evening news has been in a ratings freefall for over two decades and there is absolutely no reason to believe Couric or anyone else can convince us to go back to the good-old-days of serious-voiced oracles rationing out the day’s news in 3-minute bundles. That time has passed. The news is no longer a 30-minute experience. Now it’s a constant, unstoppable stream of stories and opinions available from multiple 24-hour cable news stations and innumerable Internet news sites.

The news can no longer be corralled by three anchors in three big chairs. Yet corralling the news is all the nightly newscasts are good for. “Here’s what you should know for today,” they say and sometimes even add “and here’s what you should think about it.” That worked when they were the gatekeepers. But the gates have been smashed, obliterated and all the anchors are left to do is hold up splintered remnants of what was and pretend they are showing us “the news.”

Couric Can’t Save Evening News

~ By Alan Stewart Carl

So the sprightly Katie Couric is taking the big seat at CBS Evening News. Now people are asking, does she have the gravitas for it? Does she have the skill? Can she muster the sturdy gaze of courage necessary when the news turns bad?

My only question is: does it matter?

The network evening news is, for all intents and purposes, irrelevant. Yes, somewhere around a combined 30 million people still watch the three network’s evening newscasts but, then again, a lot of people still own VCRs too -- doesn’t mean there’s a future in it.

The fact is, the evening news has been in a ratings freefall for over two decades and there is absolutely no reason to believe Couric or anyone else can convince us to go back to the good-old-days of serious-voiced oracles rationing out the day’s news in 3-minute bundles.

Not surprisingly, this development horrifies some of the old masters of the form. The great Walter Cronkite, in an interview last year, said of the decline in traditional news sources:

"The fact that readership of newspapers is down and the viewing of news on television is down -- in the network form, that is -- with that, we should consider that democracy is in danger,” he said. “As old Thomas Jefferson said, 'the nation that expects to be ignorant and free expects what never will and never can be.' The problem we’ve got with newspapers and television today, television news, is, I think, the fact that the public is too ignorant to understand the important news of the day. It wants to be entertained rather than informed."

There you have it. The problem isn’t obsolescence of the form. The problem is that we the people are too ignorant to see the importance in what the network evening news deems important. The blind egotism of that statement is staggering and while Cronkite does not represent those running the three network evening newscasts, can we really doubt that his opinions are still quite prevalent among producers and anchors?

I really don’t think there is a way to save the network evening news. But if they want a fighting chance, the first step is realizing they are but a small piece of the modern news environment. They cannot be the gatekeepers, the opinion-makers. They have to be satisfied with being something less. Maybe by reducing their expectations they can improve their appeal. Maybe.

But my gut tells me Ms. Couric has just stepped aboard a slowly but unstoppably sinking ship.

Democrat Harry Reid In Latest Corruption Scandal

MEDIA - POLITICS / CAMPAIGN 2006: MEDIA CENSORS DEMOCRAT SENATE MINORITY LEADER HARRY REID'S LATEST REAL ESTATE CORRUPTION SCANDAL

Real Clear Politics

The CU Smiley Guy .. Sorry folks, I just REALLY thought this smiley was cool and had to share it. CU ADMINThe deal was put together by Reid's longtime friend Jay Brown, "... a former casino lawyer whose name surfaced in a major political bribery trial this summer and in other prior organized crime investigations." Apparently Brown structured the deal so that Reid could transfer his ownership interest to Brown without disclosing it to the public. And here's the kicker: Reid didn't disclose the sale on his financial disclosure forms filed with the Senate.

The Media Scandal

~ Jed Babbin
Thu Oct 12, 10:48 AM ET

Why is it that none of the major television networks or newspapers have managed to pay attention to the biggest real scandal of the 2006 campaign season, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid's real estate shenanigans? According to yesterday's AP report, Reid pocketed a $1.1 million windfall on the sale of some Las Vegas property he didn't own at the time of the sale. This makes Hillary Clinton's futures trading venture look like amateur hour. And it's time for conservatives to act because the biggest scandal is that the media are burying the story.

According to the AP report, the deal was put together by Reid's longtime friend Jay Brown, "... a former casino lawyer whose name surfaced in a major political bribery trial this summer and in other prior organized crime investigations." Apparently Brown structured the deal so that Reid could transfer his ownership interest to Brown without disclosing it to the public. And here's the kicker: Reid didn't disclose the sale on his financial disclosure forms filed with the Senate.

Not to make too big a deal of this, but falsifying that report - as Reid apparently did - is a federal crime. Under Title 18 US Code Section 1001, it's a false official statement. For which Reid could be sent to jail. If you're looking for this on tonight's network news or on the front page of tomorrow's New York Times (next to the newest revival of the Foley minutiae) you won't find it. There's ample time for Mark Foley, the discredited generals' revolt, and even the comprehensively discredited Lancet report on civilian casualties in Iraq. But cover a real scandal, with real misconduct that's punishable under federal criminal law?

Just imagine if this were Bill Frist, not Harry Reid. Calls for his resignation from Senate leadership (probably the Senate itself) would be loud and long, the Senate Ethics Committee would have already convened an investigation, the FBI would have been called in to verify the deeds and signatures and the 527 Media carrion crows would be in full cry. There would be front-page stories about connections to organized crime and lead items on the evening news about how this will sink the Dems' chances in November. But it isn't Frist, or any other Republican. It's Reid, on the verge of what the media hope is his tenure as Senate Majority Leader. So there's no reason to cover the story, right? The media culture says that's so.

Every talk show host should be booking the editors of the NYT, WaPo and LA Times, the news directors of CBS, ABC and NBC to ask why they aren't covering this story. Every columnist should be calling them for interviews. Just ask, "why aren't you covering this story?"

Should Christians Celebrate Halloween?

RELIGION / SHOULD CHRISTIANS CELEBRATE HALLOWEEN?

CBN

The CU Smiley Guy .. Sorry folks, I just REALLY thought this smiley was cool and had to share it. CU ADMINHalloween is a real, sacred day for those who follow Wicca. In fact, it is one of two high and holy days for them. The Celtic belief of spirits being released is current, along with the worship of Samhain (the lord of death) -- both are promoted as something to embrace on that day. There is no question in my mind that to those who believe and follow the practices of witchcraft, Halloween represents an opportunity to embrace the evil, devilish, dark side of the spiritual world.

HALLOWEEN

Should Christians Celebrate Halloween?

Halloween
~ By Pastor Eric Watt
Guest Writer

CBN.com -- What about Halloween?

Should you and I be involved in the celebration of Halloween?

Finding the answer to this question has been an interesting journey in itself. I interviewed several people and then researched what many leading Christian writers, authors and spokesmen have written about the subject. I also searched various websites like www.christianitytoday.com, www.focusonthefamily.org, and www.cbn.com to read what others might be saying. What I found was an agreement on the origins of Halloween, but a mixture of recommendations about allowing our children to participate in this super-charged media driven holiday.

The origins of Halloween are Celtic in tradition and have to do with observing the end of summer sacrifices to gods in Druidic tradition. In what is now Britain and France, it was the beginning of the Celtic year, and they believed Samhain, the lord of death, sent evil spirits abroad to attack humans, who could escape only by assuming disguises and looking like evil spirits themselves. The waning of the sun and the approach of dark winter made the evil spirits rejoice and play nasty tricks. Believe it or not, most of our Halloween practices can be traced back to these old pagan rites and superstitions.

But what about today? Perhaps we can still learn from history. In the fourth century, Christians attempted to co-opt the holiday by celebrating the lives of faithful Christian saints the day before Halloween. This was a conscious attempt to provide an alternative and re-focus the day away from ghouls, goblins, ghosts, witches and other “haunted” experiences. Since that time many Christians have decided to allow their children to dress in more “innocent” costumes of pumpkins, princesses, Superman or as a cowboy. Part of this is due to the simple reality that in today’s Western culture it is nearly impossible to “avoid” Halloween.

Just before reaching a conclusion on the subject, I was struck with the thought that I ought to further my search and find out what Wicca, the official religion of witchcraft, has to say about Halloween. Perhaps they viewed the day as a simple fun and innocent neighborhood activity?

“Shock” is the only word to describe what I found. Halloween is a real, sacred day for those who follow Wicca.

So after discovering this, what is a reasonable conclusion? As Christians you and I are placed in this world to be a light in a world of darkness. There is no lasting benefit to ignore a holiday that exists around us, but it also does harm to celebrate Halloween as it has originated and grown over the centuries.

My suggestion? Christians should be teaching their children (age appropriately) that:

  • there is a spiritual world filled with goodness from God and evil from Satan (Eph. 2:1-10);
  • life with Christ has power over darkness (I John 4:4); and
  • those who celebrate Halloween either are unaware of its roots, or are intentionally promoting a world where evil is lauded and viewed as an ultimate power.

To counter the evil influence of Halloween, we need to join together and celebrate the reality of the heroic efforts of Christian saints over the evil in their day. Many leaders in the past -- and present -- have fulfilled the mandate of destroying the works of the devil through their sacrificial commitment to Christ and His Kingdom.

Too, rather than “hide” in the face of evil, we should unabashedly and boldly create an alternative that is positive and uplifting; that celebrates good over evil and the triumph of God over Satan. We need to provide an environment that also makes room for heaps of fun while using the day as a “teachable moment” to celebrate God’s protection, provision and purpose for our lives.

CNSNews.com) - The liberal Air America Radio network sought Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Friday, filing documents that showed the company had lost nearly $41 million since May of 2004.

"This regrettable action became necessary only recently, when good faith efforts to resolve outstanding debt with a creditor from the company's earliest days broke down,'' the network stated in a press release. Democracy Allies LLC will provide credit "to ensure the company's continued operation without interruption," the release continued.

According to 25 pages of documents filed with U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York, Piquant LLC -- which operates under the network's name - lists liabilities of $20 million and assets of $4 million.

Air America has struggled financially since its beginning in early 2004. Documents filed with the court show that the company lost $9.1 million in 2004, $19.6 million in 2005 and $13.1 million thus far in 2006.

The network owes the most money -- $9.8 million -- to Rob Glaser, founder of RealNetworks, Inc., who owns about 37 percent of the company and resigned as Air America chairman on Friday morning.

The radio network features such on-air talent as comedian Al Franken and talk show host Randi Rhodes and syndicates programming from TV personality Jerry Springer and Portland, Ore.-based host Thom Hartmann.

Also on Friday, Air America named Scott Elberg, who was a former general manager of radio station WLIB in New York, as its new CEO. Elberg replaced Jim Wiggett, who was acting CEO after record industry executive Danny Goldberg quit the job in April

"Nobody likes filing for bankruptcy," Elberg said in a statement. "However, this move will enable us to concentrate on informing and entertaining our audience during the coming months."

Air America Radio was started in an attempt to counter the influence of conservative talk-radio hosts such as Rush Limbaugh. Network executives initially said it would take four years to begin turning a profit.
