Prostitutes In The Pulpit

RELIGION / SOME "CONSERVATIVE" CHURCH MINISTERS WORSHIP MONEY, POLITICS AND POWER, RATHER THAN THE BIBLE AND GOD

Chuck Baldwin Live

Smiley Flag WaverMost conservative Christian ministers would never dare challenge President George W. Bush or hardly any other prominent Republican, for that matter. Regardless of how unconstitutional or even unbiblical his policies and decisions might be, they refuse to address them. They either keep quiet or publicly support these fallacious decisions. What can such conduct be if it is not a deliberate attempt to grovel before power, to prostitute our message for the pleasure of men?

Prostitutes In The Pulpit

~ By Chuck Baldwin

The Ted Haggard debacle is certainly a blight upon the cause of Christ. Unfortunately, it was not the first such embarrassment the Body of Christ has been forced to endure. Neither will it be the last. When it comes to sexual improprieties, there is no shortage of human frailty.

However, discernment and discretion teach us that not all sins are created equal. For example, one would be foolish indeed to compare King David to the sons of Eli. The character assassins in the media (and in some "Christian" periodicals) will never admit it, but we must acknowledge the difference between a good man "overtaken in a fault" and the discovery of a spiritual imposter.

We must also acknowledge the fact that even someone of the caliber of King David must suffer the consequences of adultery. It is a sad commentary on the spirituality of modern churches to see how many adulterers are allowed to remain in positions of leadership. The cover-up of adulterers, homosexuals, and even child molesters seems pervasive. In this regard, many ministers are no better than medical doctors in not being willing to demand personal accountability among their peers. This is a phenomenon that will certainly continue to bring additional embarrassment and consternation to the work of God.

That being said, it needs to be pointed out that sexual sin is not the primary problem in most churches today. There is another pandemic that is quickly destroying the modern church in America. Furthermore, this scourge is infinitely greater in destructive power than any of the sexual sins that the modern Pharisees seem to be consumed with.

The cancer that is eating the heart and soul out of the American church is the willingness of pastors and ministers to be bought, intimidated, or influenced by the purveyors of wealth and power. Too many pulpits have become little more than spiritual brothels where men are paid to provide pleasure for the rich and powerful. In the words of the Apostle Paul, they are "teachers, having itching ears."

Throughout America, pastors cater their sermons and writings to wealthy businessmen, politicians, celebrities, or other people of influence. Turn on the average "gospel" radio or television program. What do you hear? Prosperity theology. Entertainment evangelism. Positive Mental Attitude speeches.

In addition, most conservative Christian ministers would never dare challenge President George W.

It seems that with far too many of today's pastors, the supreme desire is to be successful, to be popular, to be comfortable. Or worse, to accumulate money and wealth. We are looking for lavish lifestyles, opulent opportunities, or personal praise. And our preaching reflects it.

When is the last time you heard a sermon on hell or judgment? When is the last time you heard a preacher call sin by its first name? Most notable mega-churches proudly say that they never use the word "sinner." Lost, unredeemed souls are now called "pre-Christian" people. Words such as "repentance" have been removed from the vocabulary of the average pulpit in America today.

Yet, without sin and judgment, there is no grace and forgiveness. Without hell, there is no heaven. No repentance, no faith. No wrath, no mercy. No cross, no crown. No conviction, no Holy Spirit. No serpent, no Paradise. No transgression, no Gospel.

No, it is not physical adultery that is destroying our churches. The vast majority of America's pastors and ministers are moral men who are true to their wives and families. The problem is spiritual whoredom. Preachers need to renounce their friendship with the world (called spiritual fornication in Scripture), which includes the world's political and business leaders, and renew their vows to the God of the Bible. This, more than anything else, would bring true restitution and redemption to our nation.

Decay In The Church Leads To Decay In Society

RELIGION / DECAY OF THE CHURCH IN AMERICA LEADS TOWARD THE DECAY OF SOCIETY IN AMERICA

Smiley Flag WaverWe are treading on dangerous ground in the American Church. We love to engage in hero-worship, and unfortunately, pastors are most vulnerable, gleefully receiving the flock’s adulation. The pastor is only one of the parts in the Body of Christ. Sadly, in most churches, Sunday has become a spectator sport where most sit and watch the man in the pulpit perform.

SOUL-SICK AMERICA

~ Coach Dave Daubenmire
November 9, 2006
NewsWithViews.com

My heart goes out to Ted Haggard, and especially to his family. The collateral damage to sin is devastating. Let us never forget the impact our actions have on others.

Mr. Haggard doesn’t need a kick in the ribs from me. Sadly, we all struggle with sin. I am no exception. It is a sad, sordid story that is repeated daily in America. Ted Haggard’s fall seems greater because people had elevated him so high; putting him on a pedestal that he didn’t deserve. He is a sinner, just like the rest of us.

We are treading on dangerous ground in the American Church. He becomes the show, and in some cases thousands flock to feed off of every word that spills from the pastor’s lips. Glorification of personality, especially in the Church, grieves the heart of God.

But I will save that commentary for another day.

I continue to be amazed as I scan the TV on Sunday mornings. In most cities, Sunday morning TV has become a haven for those who want to “preach the Gospel.” I wouldn’t be as discouraged if they really did … preach the Gospel. Instead they regurgitate over the air-waves a humanistic-Gospel that is nothing short of a life-enhancement seminar designed to make our journey here more enjoyable.

Go ahead; scan your dial on Sundays. See if I am wrong. Most of the sermons you will hear focus on how much the Lord wants you to be happy and prosperous, which by the way, I think He does. But that is a by-product of salvation, not the goal. Last Sunday as Ted Haggard was on my mind, I did some note taking as I flipped. Here are some of the sermons I heard:

  • We need to stop living in a state of financial need

  • The blessings of the Lord are yours for the taking.

  • End Times sermons (at least 3)

  • Healing

  • God’s supernatural provision

  • Your breakthrough is coming

  • The poor hungry kids in Sudan

  • You are what you think

  • Developing better relationships

That was just until my thumb got sore from flipping! Go to this website, or this one, here, or here. Do your own search and you will not find that one thing the preachers need to mention; the thing that is strangling the Church.

Sin.

That subject doesn’t sell many books or CD’s, and it sure doesn’t fill a church. Visit Ted Haggard’s church’s website. Do you see sin and repentance mentioned anywhere on that page?

It makes me want to weep, what we have allowed Christianity to become. Christ died to give me a better life … what a cheapening of His sacrifice. I John 3:8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.”

Sin is of the Devil. It is rebellion against God. God hated sin so much he sacrificed His Boy … wouldn’t you think we would talk more about that rather than using the Gospel to enhance our fleshly desires?

Ezekiel 18:3 “For every living soul belongs to me, the father as well as the son -- both alike belong to me. The soul who sins is the one who will die.”

Americans’ souls are sick and dying. But we want to put a salve on the flesh.

The Church Growth Movement will tell you that preaching on sin is a no-no. Read this, scroll down to Joel Osteen’s interview with Larry King, where he admits he doesn’t talk about sin! Is it any wonder he has 30,000 members in his church?

I’m a sinner, let there be no mistake about that. Like everyone else I have “besetting sins” that constantly are knocking at my heart. But as I once told my pastor, “please preach the Truth to us. When I go to church I don’t want to be told how great I am … I want to be told how much I am missing the mark. I want to be challenged. ‘Be Holy’ Christ said. Please Pastor; challenge me to live that way.”

The slick-haired TV preachers seem to have it all together. They have the new trinity of fame, fortune, and power. And whether we will admit it or not, most American’s flock to those churches because they desire to have what the pastor has … the new trinity … and it’s flesh-pleasing benefits.

I wonder how much all of that means to Ted Haggard now.

Please understand, Ted Haggard is not the exception, his sin was merely exposed. All of the “plastic pastors” are fighting demons of their own, praying secretly that their sin will not be discovered. How do I know that? They all live in a flesh suit. In fact, the higher you go up the ladder the greater the temptations. Different levels, different devils. You think it is hard fighting pride where you are now, imagine what it would be like when you receive a White House invitation, or regularly appear on TV around the world.

I can’t help but wonder if Pastor Haggard would be in this situation if he had spent more time preaching against sin. The conviction of the Holy Spirit is God’s smoke alarm. It warns you that it is time to flee the impending doom. Perhaps if sin had been a greater focus in the ministry it wouldn’t have been as easy to hide behind that isn’t-everything-great grin. As most pastors will tell you, when they preach on sin, they find they are preaching to themselves.

Temptations abound but the Apostle Paul’s solution was simple: “Flee immorality.” I Corinthians 6:18. Being born-again does not mean temptation ceases; it only provides a way of escape. We have to make the decision to run when the smoke alarm goes off.

Apart from Jesus, who was the greatest man the world has ever seen? Moses? David? Joshua? Daniel? Samson? We could certainly get a discussion going on that one. But fortunately, Jesus already answered the question for us.

Matthew 11:11 Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen one greater than John the Baptist:

None greater than John the Baptist, huh? Isn’t that amazing? John the Baptist was not welcomed into the churches of his day. He spent most of his time living in the wilderness eating locust and wild honey. He didn’t have a huge following, no multi-media productions, no books and CD’s to promote. His message was simple and Jesus said it was the most important message ever delivered. What was that message?

Matthew 3:1-2 In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” We could learn something from that radical.

Ted Haggard won’t be the last to fall. Many more are afflicted with the illness. Sin is nothing more than soul-sickness. Americans are rotting in their souls and instead of a pastorate of John the Baptist’s trumpeting the cure, America’s pulpits are filled with snake-oil salesman marketing the “blessings of God,’ feeding our flesh, increasing the butts and the bucks.

Luke 13: 2-5 “And Jesus answering said unto them, Suppose ye that these Galilaeans were sinners above all the Galilaeans, because they suffered such things? I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem? I tell you, nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.”

"For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?" 1 Peter 4:17

Ecclesiastes 12:13 “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.”

Repentance is the cure for soul-sick America. America needs some John the Baptists.

Industry Giants Ply Congress In Entertaiment Industry

ENTERTAINMENT / INDUSTRY GIANTS PLYING MEMBERS OF CONGRESS WITH SATCHELS OF CASH SUPERCEDE THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE

Brent Bozell III

Bozell Columns Mast Head

Smiley Flag Waver

Law makers in Washington DC face two constituencies with wildly differing levels of enthusiasm.

On the outside are the American people. Across the ideological spectrum, they are fed up with Hollywood’s assault on their values, using the public airwaves they own. On the inside are the lobbyists for the entertainment industry giants, plying members of Congress with satchels of campaign cash, and demanding only … inaction. Which has a greater effect in politics today?

Nobody Runs Against Hollywood

~ By L. Brent Bozell III
November 2, 2006

Looking back at the fall campaign, it’s yet another cycle in which the Republican political brain trust sidestepped the issue of America’s growing concern for indecency oozing out of almost every perfumed pore of Hollywood. This time it may have been the fatal mistake.

The number one issue of importance coming out of the ’04 elections was “moral values,” thus presenting the GOP with the opportunity to pounce on the indecency issue during the ’06 campaign. I visited with one Republican incumbent running for re-election and suggested that this would be an ideal theme for his campaign. He responded that in all his years in the Senate he’d never received as much constituency mail as what landed in his mail box, his email and his voice mail following the Janet Jackson Super Bowl striptease. But he also left me with the clear impression, validated later by his campaign performance, that he’d do nothing on this front.

Republican strategists pull muscles just thinking about Dan Quayle scorning the “Murphy Brown” single-mom plot in 1992.

Here and there was an exception. In TV ads in Pennsylvania, family-values stalwart Sen. Rick Santorum told voters “I'm even working with Hillary Clinton to limit inappropriate material in children’s video games, because it makes more sense to wrestle with America's problems than with each other.” I’m sure a few other candidates had throw-away lines in their stump speeches. But there was nothing of substance, nothing serious coming out of this crowd.

And it was a lost opportunity in another way. The biggest rap against the GOP from its conservative base has been its do-nothing approach to governance, yet on the issue of decency the Republicans could point to a smashing legislative accomplishment. Still, no one could seem to locate the fact that on June 15, President Bush signed the Broadcast Decency Enforcement Act, which act increased tenfold the potential of FCC fines to those who continue to violate the public trust by pouring garbage on the public airwaves. The House version of the bill passed in June by a 379-35 margin, and the Senate passed it by unanimous consent -- no roll call vote. It was a smashing success, exactly in line with the sentiments of the vast majority of Americans.

So why the campaign silence? Maybe it’s because, as with so many other “values” issues, the Republican leadership was never enthusiastic. It’s important to note that it took the Republicans in the Senate two and a half years after the Janet Jackson breast-baring to pass their version of the bill -- and they did so only after massive constituency pressure.

And there’s the rub. The problem is that law makers in Washington DC face two constituencies with wildly differing levels of enthusiasm.

Take the idea of cable choice, which would allow viewers to choose their cable channels a la carte and, more importantly, not have to pay for networks they don’t watch or, more emphatically, find personally offensive. It’s a slam-duck idea, one conservatives and liberals, Republicans and Democrats alike, could endorse.

In June, Sen. John McCain offered an amendment to a Senate telecommunications bill that would have offered regulatory incentives to cable operators to offer cable choice to their subscribers. But it was defeated in committee by a vote of 20 to 2. Conservatives and liberals, Republicans and Democrats alike -- they all fled. Only Sen. Olympia Snowe joined McCain in support.

One big reason? Common Cause reports that between 1991 and 2006, major cable industry interests and their trade groups spent more than $105 million on campaign contributions to federal candidates and on lobbying in Washington. Since 2003, major cable companies have ramped up “government affairs” spending and donating to keep Congress and regulatory agencies from asking tough questions about cable mergers, cable price increases, and to suffocate cable choice in the crib.

Will a strengthened Democratic presence in Washington prove to be any different in the indecency debate? In the Senate particularly there are members of that party -- Joe Lieberman, Jay Rockefeller, Byron Dorgan, Mark Pryor, Blanche Lambert Lincoln and Clinton come to mind -- with proven records. A move in this direction could bring waves of conservative Democrats, once-disaffected with their party, and now disdainful of their adopted GOP, back into the fold. But would these Democratic leaders be willing to buck the lobbyists as well as their Hollywood benefactors? What of the Republicans? Will time in the wilderness allow them to rediscover their roots? It’s a wide open question, with a wide open field, and a continuing political opportunity. Time will tell who grabs it.

Restore Values To America's Self-Government

AMERICA - POLITICS AND RELIGION / RESTORING FAMILY, HERITAGE, MORALITY, TRADITION, TRUTH AND VALUES

Coach Dave Daubenmire

Smiley Flag WaverOver the past forty years the American public has silently and steadily lost touch with the past. In this Age of Information, we are embarrassingly ignorant of our roots. As a wise man once said, “those who forget the past are condemned to repeat it.” As America spins in circles am I the only one who feels dizzy? Our children will be the one’s to pay the price.

Unless we are willing to build bridges across racial and denominational walls, the Church in America will continue to appear powerless to stem the tide of debauchery sweeping across this land. If we love our country, our children, and our Lord, we must lay down our swords against each other and focus on a unified effort to restore Biblical values to this great experiment in self-government.

REBUILDING THE WALLS

Coach Dave Daubenmire
November 2, 2006
NewsWithViews.com

There is a great deal of talk these days about tearing down the walls that divide the Church.

Just as important as tearing down walls is the need to rebuild some that we have allowed to crumble. Isaiah 58:12 “And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in.”

A friend of mine who works in the construction business once told me that reconstruction is harder than new-construction because of the tearing-down process that has to take place before the old foundation upon which you have to re-build can be exposed. The average American citizen no longer has any idea about the old foundations of this country. Most Christians are so heavenly minded, that they are no longer any earthly good. We have become savorless salt, filling our shakers with “seasoning” from the world.

Hosea 4:6 “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.”

Over the past forty years the American public has silently and steadily lost touch with the past. In this Age of Information, we are embarrassingly ignorant of our roots. As a wise man once said, “those who forget the past are condemned to repeat it.” As America spins in circles am I the only one who feels dizzy? Our children will be the one’s to pay the price.

Since I have been writing and absorbing the regular feedback from those who read my commentaries, I have been becoming more and more aware of the dearth of understanding amongst Christians as to what is really happening to our nation. The post-WWII assault on Truth, our Constitution, and our Faith, especially in our public education system, has left the foundations of America cracked and crumbling. Too long content with sticking my thumb in the dike every time a tyrannical court makes an abdominal ruling, I have come to the realization that America has far more ignorance than I have thumbs. I have decided to make better use of my hands by grabbing a hammer, some nails, and begin to rebuild the wall.

For over 6 years I have been visiting churches, men's groups, youth groups, and schools, trying my best to make the argument that Christians must engage the culture. It is only during the last few months that I have come to the conclusion that men and women will not stand and fight simply because of "a lack of knowledge.” Part of the unwillingness to speak up comes from a woeful ignorance of the past. We don’t know enough to defend our position.

Over the past couple of years I have dedicated myself to a study of the American history that I deemed irrelevant during my high school daze. When I was sued by the ACLU for praying I knew in my heart that I had a right to pray with our team, but I had no legal basis for my belief. How could praying be against the law? Didn’t the First Amendment, the one bit of the Constitution I remembered, guarantee me freedom of religion?

I dove headlong into history and was amazed at what I found.

At a recent presentation I was making in Illinois, I made the comment that one of my attorney friends had told me that he had never read the Constitution. He explained that all he'd studied in law school were court decisions…what judges had said about the Constitution. In all of his law school classes, not one was a study of the Constitution and the original intent of the Founders.

After my presentation was over that morning, both a local practicing attorney (who was a former prosecutor), as well as a currently-seated judge who was running for re-election, confirmed that they too had NEVER READ THE CONSTITUTION! Is it any wonder our legal system is a mess? Our law schools teach lawyers to study the unconstitutional opinions of other misinformed judges! Instead of stare decisis that is Scary Decisis!

No matter how hard I tried to convince Christians that we had been duped by the courts, most had become convinced that the “separation of church and state” was in the Constitution--and most assumed it was written in the Bill of Rights. I have been working diligently to spread the truth every time I had the opportunity to speak. I have recently come to the realization that I don’t have the time, nor the invitation, to speak in every church in America. But I am driven to get the word out.

I have created a Powerpoint presentation that I use when I teach. Taped in a church, the one hour sessions are powerful and truthful and open the eyes of people every where I carry the message. My high-energy presentation, supported by documentation, is equipping with the facts those who are willing to learn about the coup that has taken place in America. We must re-educate ourselves or we will never be able to save the Republic. I am not an attorney, but I can read! What part of Congress shall make no law don’t you understand? Do we need a misinformed attorney or judge to explain those five words to us?

I am making these presentations available online to those who would like to help spread the Truth. I have done all of the work, gathered the information together, and presented it in a way that is sure to inspire you. Each packet includes a one-hour CD, and a small 10-page manual that provides follow-along documentation for easy self-study. It is nothing fancy, just plain talk, laced with Scripture, but the Truth will set you free!

Three different teachings are currently available and more will follow. The studies include:

This CD and documentation will open your eyes to how far America has fallen from the intentions of the Framers of this nation. This lesson covers The Mayflower Compact, Articles of Confederation, Northwest Ordinance, preambles of the 50 States, an overview of the Declaration of Independence, a brief overview of the Constitution, the Danbury Baptists' letter to Jefferson, Jefferson's letter to the Danbury Baptists, the wall Hugo Black built, an explanation of the First Amendment, quotes from the Founding Fathers, and the U.S. Supreme Court decision Holy Trinity vs U.S.

Secular Humanism vs. Christianity: The Battle of the Worldviews

We have been told that our schools are supposed to be "religion free" zones. This lesson exposes the indoctrination of America's school children in the religion of Secular Humanism. Guaranteed to change the way you see government schools. Learn about what determines a Biblical worldview, does your pastor have a Biblical worldview, what is Secular Humanism, quotes from famous Humanists, and evolution is their tool. Moral Relativism, situational ethics, when our courts declared that Humanism is a religion, John Dewey's influence, how the religion of Secular Humanism is being taught in our schools, the 15 planks of the Humanist Manifesto, and a Questions and Answers session.

We hear a lot these days about tyranny, but few understand the tyranny of the courts. None of the major cultural issues of our day have been decided by a vote of the People, but rather by the edict of judges. Judges’ decisions are not laws....they are opinions. Only the legislative branch can make law. The power of the People has been taken away. Topics covered include What is Tyranny, America is a republic not a democracy, what is an oligarchy, what our Founders said about democracy, God's four levels of government, Biblical basis for our three branches of government, powers of each branch, separation of powers, how the courts have usurped power, bogus "Right to Privacy," what is a Penumbra, Krytocracy, how the 13, 14, 15 Amendments voided State’s Rights, and seven Supreme Court decisions that changed America.

I am convinced that these powerful teachings will make a difference with you and your friends. They can be used in Bible studies, Sunday School, as a lesson for home educators, and would be great to use to open the eyes of your pastor!

Normally we will ask a donation of $12 for each class, but as an introductory offer we would like to make all three available for a donation of $25, plus shipping and handling.

But here is the great thing … you can make as many copies as you like … give them to all of your friends ... no copyright restrictions. I’m not interested in building a ministry. I’m trying to help build the kingdom!

Consider this. Imagine if you held a Bible study with 10 people in your home. These one-hour classes will be valuable in helping develop a Biblical worldview. Now imagine if the host of the Bible study gave a copy of the teaching to all 10 people, and each of them shared it with ten. We could exponentially impact this nation.

Order yours today. Only the Truth can save America. Together we can begin to rebuild the walls.

I’m no David Barton or Bill Federer but the information and presentation are invaluable.

My people perish for a lack of knowledge . . . it is time we rescued the perishing!

CRINO's: [C]hristian [R]epublicans [I]n [N]ame [O]nly

POLITICS & RELIGION / CINO'S + RINO'S = CRINO'S: [C]HRISTIAN [R]EPUBLICANS [I]N [N]AME [O]NLY

Chuck Baldwin Live

Smiley Flag WaverMany of our pastors and Christian leaders today are far more interested in not offending the powers that be than they are in speaking the uncompromising message of truth. This is especially true if the political power has an "R" behind his name. It doesn't seem to matter to a tinker's dam whether that man promotes policies that expand abortion-on-demand, that further legitimize aberrant sexual lifestyles, that leave our borders open to terrorists, that eviscerate constitutional freedoms, or that explode the size and scope of the federal government. Because he is a Republican, he is "good" and must not be opposed.

Dear Brother Pastor: Dare To Be A Micaiah

~ By Chuck Baldwin
October 24, 2006

Today's column is a heart-felt appeal to my pastor-brethren. If there was ever a time when God's men in America needed to stand independently and courageously for that which is right, it is now. And if we, the pastors and preachers of America, will not stand for what is right, how can anyone else be expected to stand? Specifically, are we God's men, or have we become the lackeys for powerful politicians? I fear that in far too many instances, it is the latter.

Throughout history, God's true champions were stalwart, independent men. Men who could not be bought or bribed. Men who chose the life of unpopularity or even prison rather than kowtowing to kings or potentates. Men such as the Old Testament prophet Micaiah.

We all remember the story of Micaiah, don't we? Micaiah was the prophet who warned Ahab and Jehoshaphat regarding their imminent battle at Ramoth-gilead recorded for us in II Chronicles chapter 18.

What fascinates me about the story of Micaiah is that all the rest of the prophets, some 400 of them, said only what the king wanted to hear. Not one of them was willing to speak the truth. Not one of them was willing to defy the king's wishes. Not one of them was willing to put their allegiance to God above their friendship with the king. Then Micaiah entered the story.

Micaiah stood boldly before the king of Judah and the king of Israel and courageously told the truth. He did not try to curry favor with the king. He did not try to ingratiate himself with the king. He courageously spoke truth to power. And, as one might expect, he was not rewarded for it-at least not in this life. In spite of this, Micaiah stood as a true champion of God. A man among men. God's man.

Where are the Micaiahs today? Especially among our national Christian leaders, where is Micaiah?

It seems that many of our pastors and Christian leaders today are far more interested in not offending the powers that be than they are in speaking the uncompromising message of truth.

In such a case, have we preachers not become glorified politicians? Have we not become the servants of men?

In the story of Micaiah, it was both the "good" king Jehoshophat and the "evil" king Ahab that had made the decision to disobey God and imperil the lives of their countrymen. Both the "good" king and the "evil" king needed to hear the truth. And while they heard it not from the rest of Israel's prophets, they heard the truth from Micaiah. Both men heard the truth from Micaiah.

Whether a president, senator, or congressman is a "good" Republican or an "evil" Democrat, they need to hear a consistent message of truth from God's preachers. Our political leaders (of both parties) need to be held accountable for their misdeeds, their erroneous policies, and their unconstitutional decisions. If today's pastors would be as concerned about speaking the truth as they are about who is being elected and about not offending Republicans, our country would be much better off. Much better.

I dare say that if Al Gore or John Kerry had been elected President, they would not have been allowed to do half of what George W. Bush has gotten away with, because pastors and Christian leaders of every stripe would have shouted their disapproval from the housetops. But because Mr. Bush has an "R" behind his name, those same pastors and Christian leaders sit fat and happy-and silent. The result: George W. Bush has inflicted more lasting harm on America than Bill Clinton ever thought about inflicting. That's not an affront to George W. Bush, nor is it praise for Bill Clinton. It's an indictment upon America's pulpits.

There is another element to this discussion, one that almost everyone seems to have forgotten. When the Jewish leaders brought accusation against Jesus to Pilate, do you remember what their charge was? It was, "If you don't crucify Jesus, you are not a friend to Caesar, because Jesus is not a friend to Caesar." The fear that Pilate might be regarded as unfriendly to Caesar and that Jesus was already regarded as not being a friend to Caesar caused Pilate to consent to Jesus' death.

Forget that Caesar had enslaved the Jewish people. Forget that he was their oppressor. Forget that they labored under the heavy hand of Caesar's tyranny and taxation. They, the Jewish leaders, had formed a friendly alliance with Caesar, an alliance from which they personally greatly benefited. Therefore, they would let no one, not even their Messiah and Savior, jeopardize their friendship with Caesar.

It grieves me deeply to report that, in my estimation, this desire to be Caesar's friend has eclipsed the willingness of many of today's pastors and preachers to speak the truth. More than that, they even seem willing to join those forces that seek to silence anyone who dares challenge Caesar. Once again, especially if Caesar has an "R" behind his name.

We preachers must remain independent from the fetters of the desire for popularity or political approval. We must not give in to the temptation to become glorified politicians. As preachers, we have but one task: preach the truth, stand for the truth, and defend the truth. Whether the truth hurts Democrats or Republicans should not concern us. Whether we are considered "friends" to presidents should not matter. Who knows how Israel's history might have been changed for the better if those 400 prophets had followed Micaiah's example and not groveled before Ahab. Who knows how Germany's history might have been changed for the better if that nation's 14,000 pastors had followed the example of Dietrich Bonhoeffer and not groveled before Hitler.

By the same token, America's future will be largely determined by which example today's pastors and preachers decide to follow. Dear brother pastor: dare to be a Micaiah.
